What to Do After Losing Employer Coverage

By Laurence Paolino, RN

Losing employer coverage can feel stressful, but you often have more options than you might expect.

Act promptly

Losing job-based coverage usually opens a Special Enrollment Period, typically 60 days, to enroll in Marketplace coverage. Acting quickly may help avoid a gap.

Options to explore

  • COBRA continuation of your current plan, often at full cost
  • ACA Marketplace coverage, possibly with financial help
  • A spouse's or partner's employer plan
  • Private individual health insurance
  • Medicare, if you are 65 or older or otherwise eligible

Questions to consider

  • When does my current coverage end?
  • Are there ongoing treatments or prescriptions I need to keep?
  • What can I comfortably afford each month?
Key takeaway: Taking a moment to compare options can help you choose coverage that fits this next chapter.
