Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement
By Laurence Paolino, RN
Two common paths people consider are Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement. They work in different ways.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
- Offered by private insurers approved by Medicare
- Often includes prescription drug coverage
- May use provider networks such as HMOs or PPOs
- Has an annual out-of-pocket maximum for covered services
- Some plans include extra benefits; availability varies
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
- Works alongside Original Medicare
- Helps pay some costs Original Medicare does not cover, like coinsurance
- Generally lets you see any provider who accepts Medicare
- Usually paired with a separate Part D drug plan
- Eligibility and underwriting rules can vary by state and timing
Questions to bring to a consultation
- How important is choosing any doctor nationwide?
- Do I prefer predictable costs or lower monthly premiums?
- Are my current doctors in a plan's network?
- How do my medications fit each option?
Key takeaway: Neither path is right for everyone — the best fit depends on your health needs, budget, and preferences.
